#Regarding your quiz which asked how much do we know about the First World War (Mirror, Nov 6), the answer for many of us is very little.

World War Two and subsequent conflicts have taken precedence in people’s minds.

We must be reminded of the events and suffering experienced in the First World War.

That war is the reason, after all, why we wear the Remembrance Poppy which funds the Royal British Legion. Brian Davies, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk

#What a brilliant article by Brian Reade, comparing Lewis Hamilton and Jermain Defoe as contenders for the BBC Sports Personality of The Year Award (Mirror, Nov 9).

There is no comparison between the humble Defoe and his genuine feelings and concern for the late cancer sufferer Bradley Lowery, and the egotistical Lewis Hamilton who lives in Monaco to avoid the tax laws of this country. Ron Wilson Newcastle upon Tyne

#The latest shooting atrocity in America won’t make any difference to US gun laws. If the 26, mainly children, who died at the Sandy Hook school shooting five years ago didn’t prompt Americans to stop and think, nothing will.

There are shootings in US schools nearly every month, but only the big ones make headlines. Jane Riekemann, Bath
