Going back to the gritty roots of historical warfare was the right move for Activision’s blockbuste­r Call of Duty franchise. After several games involving jet packs and futuristic weaponry, the step back into the visceral history of the Second World War is a welcome change.

The six-hour single-player campaign follows a US infantry division fighting from Normandy through to the Rhine and clearly takes influence from Band of Brothers. The visuals are great but the sound is particular­ly convincing. As ever, the Multiplaye­r
