Staff crisis to bite soon, heads warn

- BY JASON BEATTIE Head of Politics

SCHOOLS are “on the brink of a catastrophe” after years of Tory cuts, say head teachers.

A dossier by seven Birmingham primaries said they would have to “cut essential services” meaning larger class sizes, and fewer teaching assistants and support staff.

Michelle Gay, of Osborne Primary in Erdington, said: “Unless there is additional funding we cannot sustain the staffing rate.”

Ms Gay said schools minister Nick Gibb had told them “there is no money left”.

Labour’s Jack Dromey, the local MP, said: “This is the first generation since the War with worse prospects than their mums and dads. That cannot be right.”
