Powerless May in a Priti awful mess
We used to have the likes of Yes Minister, Yes Prime Minister and The Thick Of It, displaying the absurdities of Westminster. Now reality has surpassed fiction and I doubt scriptwriters could come up with the events going on in Parliament today.
At least with the sitcoms, we could see an end coming. The current government farce has people running around like headless chickens. In any other job, they would have been removed long ago.
Mrs May should have another General Election rather than let the country go down the plughole of absurdity. Geoff Willmetts Bridwater, Somerset
#Nothing could display more clearly that Mrs May is in office but not in power than the fact Ms Patel was not sacked immediately when it became clear she had broken the ministerial code. A strong Prime Minister would also have sacked Boris Johnson for his frequent undermining of her authority and his latest gaffe may which well lead to British citizen Nazanin ZaghariRatcliffe, mother of a young daughter, having her sentence in Iran doubled from five to 10 years. Valerie Crews Beckenham, Kent
#Am I the only person who thinks there could be something more to Priti Patel’s meetings in Israel with senior figures? I just don’t believe she did this all on her own. I feel this rather foolish woman could be taking the blame for Theresa May and Boris Johnson, as well as other top Tories.
Something tells me everything this government does has an air of shadiness about it.
It’s time the slate was wiped clean and trustworthy people were running the country instead of the untrustworthy clots we have at the moment. Paul Barker, Alfreton, Derbys
#Priti Patel going to Israel for secret meetings with top officials from a country which, to this day, continues to persecute Palestinians was a new low, even for this government. The only talks Britain should be having in that region is an apology to the Palestinians for the 1917 Balfour declaration. Steven McNamara, Middlesbrough
#Isn’t it about time we had a vote of no confidence in Theresa May and the dysfunctional shower she calls her government?
All they are interested in is clinging on to power and they won’t be happy until they have brought this great country and the NHS to their knees. George Sargeson, Hull
#Priti Patel lied about her secret meetings with Israeli politicians and has been forced to resign. Is it any wonder that so many people are disillusioned with politics and politicians? And I don’t mean the sex pest scandal – rather politics in general. Lenny Jones, Wigan
#Traditionally, governments have sought to bury bad news, but this one can’t because it’s all bad. And no doubt there is more to come. Will Mrs May have the gall to wish us all a Merry Christmas, I wonder? Jean Lorriman Huddersfield
