23 years’ jail for mentally ill knife killer
A MENTAL health patient who butchered a Kurdish refugee was yesterday jailed for at least 23 years.
Paranoid schizophrenic Jeffrey Barry, 56, had only just been released from a secure hospital when he knifed neighbour Kamil Ahmad more than 70 times and cut off his penis.
He called 999 and said: “I warned the crisis team. He’s dead now. It’s murder innit? But I’m going to say diminished responsibility.”
Barry killed Kamil at a supported property for people with mental illness in Knowle, Bristol, in July 2016. At the city’s crown court he pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility but was found guilty of murder.
Mrs Justice May said the decision to free him from hospital was “calamitous”.
