Brit mum in Iran jail faces breast cancer scare amid ministers’ gaffes
THE British mum held in an Iranian jail is on the brink of a nervous breakdown as she faces a breast cancer scare, her husband has revealed.
It comes as Boris Johnson faced further pressure to resign, as Jeremy Corbyn accused him of “undermining Britain”. The Foreign Secretary last week claimed Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a British-Iranian mum, had been “training journalists” at the time of her arrest last year. Mr Corbyn said that Mr Johnson is “putting our citizens at risk”, adding: “It’s time for him to go.” Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe, 38, accused of plotting against the Iranian regime, faces an extra five years in jail following Mr arrest. Mr Ratcliffe said last night that his wife has been complaining of sharp stabbing pains in her breasts for some months. A consultant said the lumps were likely to be benign but due to her family history of breast cancer she should be kept under “close surveillance”. Mr Ratcliffe said his wife had expressed anger over the “shambles” Mr Johnson was making of her case. It came as Mr Corbyn called on the Foreign Secretary to quit. The Labour leader said: “We’ve put up with Johnson Johnson’s comments. On Saturday, she was taken to hospital in Tehran for an ultrasound after finding new lumps in her breasts. It follows a previous inconclusive mammogram. Her husband, Richard Ratcliffe, said she is now “on the verge of a nervous breakdown”.
