BASTOCK GETS ONE BY SHILTS

-

JOURNEYMAN keeper Paul Bastock has beaten Peter Shilton’s record for competitive club appearances.

The 47-year-old (above) played his 1,250th game on Saturday when Wisbech of the United Counties League Premier Division beat Thetford Town 4-1 in the FA Vase.

A crowd of 286 saw him pass the total of fellow keeper Shilton, who became England’s most capped player in a glittering 31-year career.

Bastock, whose best times were between the sticks for Boston United, said: “Happy days, it’s done. The new record is set by the very old, old cat.”

Dover took another step towards promotion to the Football League by beating Eastleigh 2-0.

James Alabi and Connor Essam were on target to move the Whites a point clear at the top of the National League table.

Dover are now unbeaten in nine but coach Mark Newson insisted: “The boys have got their feet on the ground. They know there’s a long way to go.

“We’re top, yes, but it’s very tight up there and one loss can put you down four or five places.”

Macclesfield remain on Dover’s coat-tails thanks to a 2-0 win at fourth-bottom Barrow.

Winger Elliott Durrell sealed it with a cracking curler into the top corner after skipper Jared Hodgkiss had opened the scoring.

Torquay and Solihull Moors, both six points adrift of safety, were both beaten at home.

Joe Pigott scored the only goal for fifth-place Maidstone at Torquay while Solihull went down 2-0 to Sutton United, who are fourth.
