SHAMEFUL GRENFELL QUESTION
Tory poll seeks a ‘score’ out of ten
A TORY survey asking people to rate the importance of the Grenfell Tower fire has been slammed as shameful and insensitive.
The poll of residents living in the same London borough as the block invited them to gauge the impact of the disaster on a scale of zero to 10.
It asked them to score “the tragedy of Grenfell and the help for the families affected and the wider community”.
At least 80 people died in the inferno that ripped through the block in Kensington in June. The survey – in a letter from Kensington, Chelsea and Fulham Conservatives – also asked locals to put a number out of ten on other issues including council tax and recycling. Shadow Communities Secretary Andrew Gwynne called it “incredibly insensitive” to people hit by the disaster, many of whom have yet to be rehomed. He said: “Grenfell was a national tragedy and this is a further insult to residents.”
Moyra Samuels, of campaigners Justice4Grenfell, accused Tories of a “lack of emotional intelligence” and being more focused on council elections next May than on survivors.
Kensington’s Labour MP Emma Dent Coad called the poll “shameful.”
Tory-run Kensington and Chelsea Council has been criticised for its slow and inadequate response to the disaster, with leader Nick Paget-Brown standing down soon after it.
The local Conservatives have been contacted for comment.
