Christmas dinners stuffed thanks to turkey shortage
A TURKEY shortage could leave families without the traditional treat on the table this Christmas.
Last year’s outbreak of avian flu across Europe is being blamed as farmers have not been able to rear enough chicks in time for the festivities after a huge cull.
Figures from analysts Beacon show a shortfall of 1.5 million birds, which will raise prices. Supermarket supplies are safe but small shops and restaurants could struggle to keep up with demand. Beacon managing director Paul Connelly said: “We may see less turkeys available. “While large retailers will have quotas assured, independent retailers and hospitality businesses face being hit hardest and may have to pass on the increased costs to their customers.”
