Prayers for sick David
Family’s vigil for singer in hospital with organ failure
DAVID Cassidy’s family were last night fearing the worst for the musician, who was in hospital with liver and kidney failure.
The former heart-throb, 67, had been in a medically induced coma and was in a critical condition.
Son Beau Cassidy, 26, last night thanked fans for their support. He wrote on the star’s Facebook page: “Unfortunately David is very sick.
“However he’s getting the support he needs, surrounded by the people he loves most. Thank you very much for your love and concern.”
David was taken to hospital last week. His publicist had said he was “now conscious and surrounded by family” but his condition was said to be deteriorating.
A source told Us magazine: “[David] is hoping and waiting for a liver transplant. If he happens to get one in time the prognosis is up in the air.
“His son, ex-wife Sue and his brother Patrick are there now. He was in an induced coma but as of right now is conscious. He is on pain medication to keep him comfortable.
“He is in and out of consciousness.”
In February David announced he was suffering with dementia, after forgetting his words at a concert.
The star performed his final show the following month, in New York, before retiring to concentrate on his health. He said: “I want to focus on what I am, who I am and how I’ve been without any distractions. I want to love. I want to enjoy life.”
David shot to fame in 1970s TV musical sitcom The Partridge Family, in which his stepmum Shirley Jones played his mother, and had solo hits including Cherish and Daydreamer. He had a shortlived TV show, David Cassidy: Man Undercover, and a string of guest roles. David married actress Kay Lenz in 1977 but divorced four years later. A second marriage to horse breeder Meryl Tanz was also brief. In 1986 he and actor girlfriend Sherry Williams had a daughter, singer Katie, now 30. Third wife Sue Shifrin, Beau’s mum, filed for divorce in 2014 after 23 years of marriage. It followed David’s arrests for drink-driving. In 2015 he filed for bankruptcy.
