Tory school cuts so short-sighted

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

Tory cuts to education show that they will always see government spending as wasting money. They do not seem to realise that investing in education, training, transport, technology, health and housing all contribute to long-term productivity and growth that everyone can benefit from and they can recoup in the form of taxes in the future.

Tory low tax and small state dogmatism leaves us dependent on a volatile private sector whose interests are to make as much profit and to pay as little tax as possible, eroding public finances even more.

Only a strong and healthy public sector that invests in people’s lives can stop us being reduced to just consumers and workers.

Brett Grainger, Rugeley, Staffs

# The Tories really are the pits with parents being asked to give money for pencils and textbooks as the harsh impact of education cuts are felt in the Prime Minister’s own backyard. The Tories can’t blame the Labour Party for this desperate situation because they’ve been in power since 2010. But they seem to find cash from their ‘magic money tree’ when they want –such as the £1billion for the pact with the DUP to stay in power. I hope the electorate remembers the hardships of the last seven years because we urgently need a change of direction. The Tories can’t be trusted anymore – they have to go. # So, now we have headteachers pleading to parents for money to buy basic items for schools as this sham of a Government starves education, and the NHS, of funds.

Where is all the money from these cuts actually going? And please don’t say the HS2 which is an obscene waste of public funds.

Step up Corbyn, and let’s get rid of these Tories once and for all.

# I was appalled to read that parents are being asked to pay for basic school supplies. I think the money wasted on paying the opinionated blowhards in the House of Lords – who pick up a fortune for doing nothing – should be rerouted to this cause. I live in hope that one day we will have an elected second chamber.

# How low can this inept Government go? They will be opening workhouses next – it is like reading a Charles Dickens novel.

Jenny Cleaver, Barwell, Leics

# My own child’s school is struggling. Brilliant teachers have had to be made redundant and the school minibuses for sports and educational visits are going. Classes are getting bigger with kids crammed in – the list just goes on and on.

# So, first Mrs May gives the DUP £1billion of our taxes to keep her job, then they spend £1.5m on sprinklers for Parliament, and yet now we hear there are schools asking for £197 a year from parents to buy everyday school equipment, like books and pencils. Not only that, but parents are being told they can pay the money in one lump sum or monthly. Disgraceful.

# I hate that most documentaries now start with a five-minute summary of what’s coming up later in the programme. You never used to see this and it is an insult to our intelligence.

I suppose they do it as they are afraid of the modern person’s short attention span. Gary Walker Banstead, Surrey # Has the SNP not realised that raising the price of alcohol will make it dearer than drugs? Many people may swap to the cheaper option to get through the difficulties and drudgery of life. Scotland may have less alcoholics in 20 years, but could have a serious drug problem instead.
