WARNER & COOK: LEFT ARM OPENERS... WORLDS APART

- FROM DEAN WILSON in Brisbane

ALASTAIR COOK returned to the scene of one of his greatest batting triumphs and gave an early glimpse of the battle he will have with fellow left-handed opener David Warner.

Cook sat in front of the cameras just minutes after Warner and, just like they are out in the middle, the pair could not have been more different.

Warner is a dasher, a shot-maker, a man who will take the game away from you in a session or quicker and he will let you know he is enjoying it with a word or two.

Cook is more patient, quieter. He defends and makes you try again. He hurts you, but he takes his time doing it and for a four-man bowling attack that means hard work on the body.

“To win out here, you have to score big runs and make sure the opposition spend a lot of time in the field because they can be quite draining conditions,” said Cook, who ground out 235 not out at The Gabba in 2010.

“Whether you have a four or five-man bowling attack it can be hard, but certainly against a four-man attack you can put a serious amount of miles into their legs.

“Ideally I’ll spend lots of time out there and if I do I’ll be scoring runs. As a top order you can get your rewards later in the game and later in the series.”

Warner likes to get stuck in. He won’t hold back on either his strokes or his tongue.

“I think when you’re in the heat of the battle and things get a bit fiery out there I’ll always be feisty,” Warner said.

“It’s about time we got on with the cricket. Hopefully there is a bit of banter out there – I always love that. We’ll start fresh from ball one and have a crack.”
