SILVA HITS BACK AT BIG SAM

-

DAVID WAGNER will not hit the panic button, despite admitting for the first time this season that Huddersfield were not good enough.

He was dismayed by the performance at Everton, where home keeper Jordan Pickford did not have to make a single save.

Wagner conceded there was not enough quality and creativity in the final third.

But although close to the drop zone after a club record run of seven away games without a goal, he did not think the answer was to splash out next month.

“No, it’s not about the transfer market and buying better players,” said the Terriers boss. “The players have shown they have the talent and the quality already.

“We have to make sure that we leave this behind us, and realise we have shown the quality.

“Not today, and this is very disappointing, but in the past, we focused on the things we can change, and this performance today, we have to change too.”

The German has produced little short of a miracle to make FROM FRONT PAGE years of coaching. But when Big Sam was unveiled last week – after the Blues had twice been refused permission to approach Hornets boss Silva – he bristled at suggestions he was only second choice.

Allardyce (for whom Gylfi Sigurdsson scored against Huddersfield, right) said: “Marco Silva’s track record has got no comparison Huddersfield competitive in the Premier League, but they were stifled by Sam Allardyce’s new-look Everton and then brushed aside, Gylfi Sigurdsson (top) opening the scoring and Dominic Calvert-Lewin grabbing the second.

Wagner (above, with Elias Kachunga) insisted he has faith in his squad: “This wasn’t a nice week for us, it wasn’t what we expected, but we have to learn from it.

“Confidence comes from results and not conceding goals as well, especially away from home. Our away record isn’t good and this is what we’d like to change.

“We have to keep on fighting, and I have every trust we can change this if we stay focused and don’t think too much on what happened today. It was the first time we’ve been very, very disappointed, because we hadn’t showed what we are able to show.

“Against City, we were able to show something, even I think against Arsenal we’ve shown something, though we lost 5-0.

“Every defeat I think has its own story, but in the end it’s a defeat – we will fight and we will turn this.” whatsoever with mine. He got Hull City relegated last season.” But Silva, 40, said: “I read what he said and it does not make sense.

“Go and see what he was doing when he was 40 years old, or see what he was doing in his first seven seasons as a coach.

“Then look at what I am doing at the same age – or wait until I am 63 years old, and then compare us.”
