WHY DO I FEEL SO JEALOUS?

-

Dear Coleen

I feel sad and jealous of other people on a daily basis. I’m only 14 and when I see others acting happy I get upset and mad about it because I don’t feel like that.

It’s affecting me to the point where my brain boils and I get teary. I just don’t know what to do any more as I can’t keep it together. Also, therapy is not a possibility here, so I can’t have that as an option. Have any tips for me?

You don’t make it clear why you don’t have access to therapy, but you can speak to your GP about how you’re feeling and your school might also have a counsellor or someone trained to help pupils with emotional issues. You don’t mention your family, but I think you should start with them and explain how you’re feeling. Keep in mind there’s always someone to talk to and it’s very rare to have a problem that someone else hasn’t experienced. You can also get lots of information and access support through youngminds.co.uk.

You’re at a tricky age – working towards exams, seeing your body change and experiencing lots of different emotions. It can be a stressful time.

And when you’re feeling a bit confused or low, it’s not uncommon to look at other people and think: “Why are they having such a great time?” But here’s the thing – most people only show us the good bits of their lives, especially on social media. You don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors but, trust me, no one’s life is plain sailing.

And if you do feel envious, then use it in positive way to work hard at school and plan what you want to do with your life. Good luck.
