Women pension war

Commons walkout as Tory refuses help over age rises

- BY DAN BLOOM Political Reporter dan.bloom@mirror.co.uk

WOMEN staged a noisy demo in the Commons over pension age rises which put many in ”financial despair”.

Women Against Pension Inequality are fighting for 2.6 million females born in the 1950s whose state pension age is rising to 66 by 2020.

They heckled a debate in which Tories joined Labour calls for ministers to help.

And they turned their backs on Pensions Minister Guy Opperman who refused to backtrack on the policy, before walking out noisily. Women affected have had to rethink retirement plans at short notice and face financial hardship, campaigners said.

Waspi’s Jane Cowley, who led the 50-strong walkout, said they were fed up with the same issues being “rehashed”.

Labour’s Carolyn Harris, warned many were “left in financial despair”. And referring to ministers, she added: “They deceived these women. They stole their security and shattered their dreams.”

TORY Pensions Minister Guy Opperman should hang his head in shame after the Parliamentary protest by women he’s cheating of their pensions.

Ministers parroting scripts trying to defend the indefensible is contemptible and the hapless MP will be haunted by his callousness.

The two million women robbed represent the hollowness of Theresa May’s claim to hate burning injustices and her plastic pledge to be on the side of the “just about managing”.

Conservative Ministers and MPs shortchanging women after a lifetime’s graft tells us more about the Tory Party’s indifference than May wants us to know.
