ENGLAND FANS PLAN WACA TRIBUTE TO CRICKET-MAD DAD

- BY LIAM PRENDERVILLE

ENGLAND fans Gareth and Dan Williams are hoping to honour their late cricket-mad father with a poignant tribute at the Ashes.

The brothers, from Crewe, made a spontaneous decision to travel out to Perth for the third Test following the sudden passing of dad John last summer.

John, who followed England on home soil, had a trip Down Under on his bucket list before he suffered a heart attack in June. Now, his two sons (above) – members of the Barmy Army – hope to scatter his ashes in the final ever Test at the WACA.

“Deciding to come out to Australia was a snap decision – within about three hours this trip was booked and packed and ready to go,” said Gareth. “To come to such an iconic ground and it being the last Ashes Test to be played here, that sealed it – the last act of our father and one of the last acts on this pitch. “It would always have been a dream of his. We got a polite response turning us down and suggesting we use one of the rose gardens outside of the stadium. “We are not suggesting something outlandish or with fanfare, we would simply like to scatter dad’s ashes at the ground before or after one of the day’s play, preferably somewhere on the playing surface.”
