What people with osteoporosis need to know
Medics have been advised to prescribe drugs to prevent bone fractures to a wider at-risk group.
UK advisory body NICE has published guidance on the use of bisphosphonates for reducing bone fractures in people at increased risk.
Bisphosphonates are commonly used as a first-line treatment for people with osteoporosis to strengthen their bones.
The NICE guidelines now recommend extending their use to people who have at least a 1% risk of suffering bone fractures within the next 10 years.
The National Osteoporosis Society’s clinical director Fizz Thompson said: “Anything which removes barriers for people getting treatment for osteoporosis is a welcome step forwards. We will continue to work with NICE and other professional bodies to make sure there is clarity and understanding on prescribing medications.”
