Still in a league of own

- IANHYLAND on last night’s telly

Given how generous Alan Sugar has been feeling lately, it’s a pity Geoff Tipps from The League

Of Gentlemen never made it on to The Apprentice.

His latest business idea sounded every bit as underwhelming as the pair that Sugar controversially invested in on Sunday night.

Garden Centre Guru would basically involve Geoff standing in a shed in Royston Vasey’s garden centre and answering any gardening questions the customers have.

All he needed was access to Google – and some ice lollies for the kiddies. Unfortunately the only person willing to invest in Geoff’s scheme was his only friend, Mike Harris.

Mike wanted something in return though. He wanted Geoff to kill his dangerously obese wife Cheryl.

That dark twist will have comes as no surprise to anyone who has watched this BBC2 comedy from the darkly twisting minds of Reece Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton and Mark Gatiss over the years. Perhaps the only shock as it returned for the first of three anniversary specials last night was that it somehow felt even more brilliant than ever.

From the opening scene, referencing the very first episode’s opening scene, to the closing scene giving a nod to Shearsmith and Pemberton’s masterpiece Inside No 9, this return was an absolute joy.

Of course, it had many layers – including some genuinely touching scenes and an exploding hedgehog.

But even if you only watched it to laugh at the grotesque characters or marvel at the pun-tastic shop window displays and road signs, you would have been richly rewarded.
