Frantic Friday as 1.25 million drivers start Xmas getaway

- BY MARK ELLIS Transport Correspondent

TODAY is set to be the busiest on the roads with 1.25 million Christmas journeys on top of commuter traffic.

The RAC has dubbed it Frantic Friday. Spokesman Rod Dennis urged drivers planning long trips: “Avoid this day if you can.”

Around 1.87 million journeys are expected on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day but without the extra burden of commuters. On the railways, Great Western is urging passengers to complete journeys by Saturday as Paddington will be closed between December 24 and 27. The West Coast line will be shut between Preston and Lancaster. Labour MP John Grogan has tabled a Commons motion expressing “deep disappointment” at the lack of Boxing Day trains. Sainsbury’s expects today to be its biggest pay day ever with £160million ringing through tills.
