Peggy is still volunteer for shelter at 96

- BY STEPHEN WHITE

A VOLUNTEER was back at a shelter feeding the homeless yesterday – after serving meals for 80 years.

Peggy Maskery, 96, was eight years old when her mum took her to Charles Thompson’s Mission in Birkenhead, Merseyside.

Aged 16, she spent her free time helping out there and met late husband Teddy, also a volunteer.

In her eight decades, Peggy has served tens of thousands of hot meals.

This year she received an MBE for “selfless services to the people”.

Peggy, whose son David died 10 years ago, said: “I used to come every day but while the spirit is willing my body is weak.

“I’ll have a break over Christmas. I’d be brokenhearted if I stopped. They will have to carry me out.”
