SAINSBURY’S is clearing its premium beef burgers from shelves amid fears they are contaminated with killer bug E.coli.

Twelve people have fallen ill after eating the supermarket’s frozen Taste the Difference Aberdeen Angus quarter-pounders.

And families that stocked up ahead of Christmas are being urged to check their freezers for 454g packs.

Watchdog The Food Standards Agency warned shoppers: “If you have bought any of the batches, do not eat them.”

Public Health England has linked a dozen cases of E.coli to the range but said all the victims had now recovered.

Symptoms include blood in diarrhoea and abdominal pain but the bug can be lethal – causing a condition that results in kidney failure.

Sainsbury’s apologised over the outbreak yesterday, adding: “We’re investigating this with our supplier and, as a precautionary measure, we are asking customers who have purchased this product not to consume it and return it for a full refund.”

Packs with best before dates of July, September and October 2018 are at the centre of the health scare.

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s also came under fire after its website crashed, hitting shoppers making lastminute Christmas orders. A spokesman for the chain said: “Our website was down for essential maintenance but has been fixed and it’s back up and running”
