WRONG ARM OF THE LAW

Moyes fury as referee reverses decision and gives ‘handball’ goal

- BY DARREN LEWIS

DAVID MOYES slammed referee Bobby Madley for allowing Callum Wilson’s offside 93rd-minute equaliser to stand.

Madley overruled his assistant to award the goal – even though Bournemouth striker Wilson appeared to guide the ball in with the top of his arm (right) and admitted it was a “touch of magic”. Moyes fumed: “For him to overrule the linesman’s decision –

couldn’t believe it. I think you could question the offside, You could actually question whether the linesman’s decision to put his flag up was right or wrong because it looks pretty level.

“What you can’t do is question that the Bournemouth player puts it in with the top of his arm. So the goal should be ruled out one way or another.

“I have to admit, when I saw the commotion. I still thought there was no way he would overturn it. I couldn’t see how he was going to do it. The linesman puts his flag up for offside.

“Why would you even question it (above)?”

Asked why he thought the goal was not disallowed, relieved Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe admitted: “I have no idea! It looks like we might have got away with it.”

When Wilson was asked about the goal he described it as a “touch of magic” before laughing.

Madley had failed to send off Cherries’ defender Simon Francis for a dangerous boot into the face of Hammers’ Cheikhou Kouyate.

Moyes added: “If one of my players had done it everybody would have been screaming for him to be banned for six or seven games. In any other country that would have been a sending-off.”

Howe said: “The referee got that one right – there was no intent.”

Moyes has warned his West Ham stars they have run out of chances to impress him – and that some will be sold next month.

He said: “I’ve given players opportunities and I’m in a hurry.”

Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho and Bournemouth’s Harry Arter are in Moyes’ sights.
