MOUNTING tensions with Moscow are an unwelcome distraction when Islamic State is seeking new safe havens, North Korea hell-bent on building a nuclear bomb and Trump in the White House.

Provocatively sending Russian warships to skirt the UK coast is a relic of the Cold War.

But Vladimir Putin’s show of military might should be seen in the context of a powersoaked president seeking another six years in the Kremlin – though Theresa May may have unwittingly provoked him.

The time has come for both sides to take a step back and focus on improving relations.
