Duke called nuclear

-

PRINCE Philip privately supported nuclear disarmament, declassified papers show.

Documents reveal the Duke of Edinburgh, 96, was an opponent of the “ridiculous” Cold War arms race. His views were revealed in a private letter to Labour anti-nuclear campaigner Lord Brockway, who had sent him

a copy of a speech given by Earl Mountbatten, Prince Philip’s uncle, in May 1979. In the speech Mountbatten had said: “As a military man, the nuclear arms race has no military purpose.”

The Duke replied to Lord Brockway on February 17, 1981, saying he agreed with everything his uncle had said, adding “the arms race is ridiculous”.
