BBC1, 7.30pm Granville (Sir David Jason) has invested – very little – in a creepy life-sized talking Santa that isn’t pulling in the punters.

He also has a stash of cheap crackers he can’t sell. They don’t even go bang, which is all you really want from a cracker, after all.

With Madge taking his beloved Mavis away for a Christmas break, and even Mr Newbold thinking of doing a runner, it leaves Granville at the mercy of Mrs Featherstone’s (Stephanie Cole) amorous advances.

It’s a standard slapstick affair, full of misunderstandings and disappointments. But although we know exactly what to expect from this old favourite, perhaps that’s why it’s so popular.
