NIXON VISIT

MARGARET Thatcher was warned not to invite Richard Nixon in 1980. The US ambassador called the disgraced ex-President “out of touch” and doubted if she “would learn much”. But the Prime Minister went ahead with a private meeting. Mr Nixon later hailed her in a telegram for a recent “victory” over striking rail workers, calling her “gutsy”.
