Benefit cost hits councils

COUNCILS are spending hundreds of thousands of pounds dealing with the fallout from Universal Credit, Labour says today.

Research by the party shows town halls are diverting funds to stop people being left destitute by the benefit’s rollout.

Some councils warned they’ll breach their budget for discretionary housing payments by aiding claimants with rent arrears.
