Bookkeeper of Auschwitz must be locked up at 96
A 96-YEAR-OLD known as the Bookkeeper of Auschwitz must be jailed for his role at the camp, a court has ruled.
Oskar Groening counted cash stolen from victims at the Nazi death camp after he began work there in 1942.
The former SS man got a fouryear jail term in 2015 but wrangles over his age and health have delayed its start. However Germany’s constitutional court yesterday rejected a claim that locking him up at his age would violate his right to life. The judges ruled it was vital he go to jail as an accessory to 300,000 murders. At his trial, prosecutors said he supported mass murder by sorting seized bank notes. Groening admitted he was a keen Nazi when he worked at Auschwitz aged of 21. At least 1.1million people were murdered at the camp in Nazi-occupied Poland – 90% of them Jewish.
