Netflix is must-see after this

- IANHYLAND on last night’s telly

Just before Christmas, on Radio 5, Adrian Chiles asked me what I would be watching over the festive period.

At the time he thought my one-word answer – Netflix – was a bit harsh on the terrestrial channels.

Boy, if he’d been watching on Saturday night though…

Old movies, Charles Dickens outtakes on BBC1, a Blind Date revamp on C5, an update of The Price Is Right on C4 or a “new” celebritybased singing gameshow on ITV that was Lip Sync Battle meets Stars In Their Eyes meets the Mystery Guest from A Question Of Sport.

ITV called it Guess The Star – as in guess the star/s who turned it down before Jonathan Ross swallowed any remaining pride and agreed to host it.

LEGENDS

I could write a thousand words on what was wrong with this show, but its main failing was encouraging us to play along yet failing to offer any decent camera shots so we could guess the stars as they impersonated legends.

Unkind observers might also point out that the real guessing game began once the stars were revealed – because unless you were familiar with some of the lesser names on ITV’s roster you’d have been struggling.

As for Blind Date and The Price Is Right, despite Paul O’Grady doing a fine job on the former and Alan Carr bringing just the right amount of affectionate disdain to the latter, neither could be described as must-see TV.

Of course, Saturday may have simply been an off-night. However, if it was a taste of what we can expect in 2018 I have one thing to say. Happy Netflix Year, everyone!
