Profumo-link Lady Astor dies aged 87
LADY Astor, the ex-model caught up in the Profumo affair, has died aged 87.
Born Bronwen Pugh, she was considered one of the world’s great beauties in the 50s and wed Bill Astor – William Waldorf, 3rd Viscount Astor – in 1960.
She ran the Cliveden estate in Buckinghamshire, where War Secretary John Profumo met Christine Keeler, then 19, swimming naked in the pool.
The 1961 party triggered a scandal that ultimately brought down Harold Macmillan’s government.
Lady Astor reinvented herself as a psychotherapist but the stigma lived on. She said: “It was like living a nightmare.”
She died at home in London on December 28.
Keeler passed away on December 4, aged 75.
