Darlow: Cup can lift Toon

- BY SIMON BIRD

KARL DARLOW has begged Newcastle to end a decade of FA Cup misery.

Toon – who host League Two Luton on Saturday – have not played a tie beyond January during the Mike Ashley era.

And the keeper, recalled because of injury to Rob Elliot, said: “The Premier League may be our priority because we desperately want to stay in this division, but a good run in the FA Cup is good for confidence and good for the squad.”

In their last 11 attempts, Newcastle have exited in the third round seven times and not gone beyond the fourth. They have been finalists 13 times and lifted the trophy six times – but not since 1955 – and last reached the semi-finals in 2005.

Darlow added: “We want to do our best every match. Hopefully we can do well and get as far as possible.

“It would be nice to win at St James’ Park again and give the fans something to cheer about at home.”
