West Brom demand FA investigation after confirming that Livermore was abused over death of his baby son Player will be cleared but Burley rages: ‘How low will some of these cretins stoop over football? Idiots.’
FOOTBALL has united to support Jake Livermore and condemn the “cretin” who taunted the player over the death of his baby son.
West Brom have defended Livermore after he was restrained from going into the crowd to confront a West Ham fan at the London Stadium on Tuesday.
Former Chelsea midfielder Craig
FROM BACK PAGE Burley last night tweeted: “Fans taunting Jake Livermore over the death of his baby son.
“How low will some of these cretins stoop over a game of football? Idiots.”
Livermore was on the Albion bench after being substituted when a fan behind the dugout mocked him over Jake Junior, who died at birth in May 2014.
West Ham say the culprit was ejected from the ground, has since been banned and that “given the nature of the allegations, the club will continue to investigate before taking the appropriate action”.
Fan @spencerOwen tweeted: “Inexcusable behaviour & I hope he’s banned for life. This horrid individual doesn’t represent true West Ham fans or the club I support.”
Two years ago, the FA – who are investigating – decided against suspending the midfielder when he tested positive for cocaine following his bereavement, pointing to “the specific and unique nature of the circumstances”. In 2016 he said: “It was a young human being who got lost in circumstances and didn’t know how to react.”
West Brom offered “total support” and in a statement said: “Jake was subjected to general abuse from home supporters which he shrugged off.
“However, he acknowledges he moved to confront one spectator who chose to make a comment about the death of his infant son.
“The Club would like to think all right-minded football supporters could understand this reaction which did not result in any physical exchanges before Jake was led away to our dressing room.”
