May rejects Tory leader’s beggars plea
THERESA May has slapped down her local Tory council leader after he called on the police to clear homeless people off the streets of Windsor before the royal wedding.
Simon Dudley, leader of Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council, said “vagrants and beggars” would put the town in an “unfavourable light” when Prince Harry marries Megan Markle in May.
The PM said: “It’s important councils work hard to ensure they are providing accommodation for those people who are homeless.”
She added councils should work with police to tackle “aggressive begging”.
Murphy James, of Windsor Homel e ss Project, called Mr Dudley’s views “abhorrent”.
