Regarding nurses replacing paramedics as first responders in some areas (Mirror, Jan 1), there are hundreds of NHS schemes using volunteer Community First Responders.

Last year, I responded to more than 500 incidents. We are trained to treat life-threatenin­g conditions and respond to falls, breathing problems and chest pain.

Most use their own vehicles. Some use cars donated by local businesses. Although an ambulance is sent to the same incident, the CFRs usually arrive first. Paul Gittins MBE Bewdley, Worcs

Regarding your leader column “Train fares out of line” (December 30), you quoted £132million in subsidies without taking into account the revenue paid back to the Government.

Go-Ahead’s rail business made a net contributi­on to the Government of £77.6m in 2016/17, enabling further investment in infrastruc­ture to support a more resilient rail network for the future.

We also paid over £25m in corporatio­n tax last year and were the first FTSE 350 company to be awarded the Fair Tax Mark.

Across the whole rail industry, train companies have gone from operating at a £2billion deficit in 1997 to being a £200m contributo­r to the Government. David Brown, Chief Executive, The Go-Ahead Group plc
