Legendary Wembley final’s hat-trick ball up for auction
THE only Wembley FA Cup Final hattrick ball is up for auction.
Stan Mortensen’s scoring feat helped Blackpool beat Bolton Wanderers 4-3 in 1953.
But the match is known as the Matthews Final because of winger Stanley’s exploits. In 2014 his winning medal was sold for £220,000. The ball – once given as payment to an electrician called out on Christmas Day – is a “glorious part of our game”, said auctioneer Charles Hanson who gave it a £5,000 estimate. The sale is in Etwall, Derbys, on February 22.
