CURLE PLEADS FOR A UNITED WAY FORWARD

The start of the Dons’ rise as a stunning goalkeeping display by Dickie Guy and Micky Mahon’s winner gives the Southern League side victory and stun the First Division Clarets.

One of the biggest upsets ever with John Motson famously proclaiming: “The Crazy Gang have beaten the Culture Club.” Lawrie Sanchez scored the winner for Bobby Gould’s side with Dave Beasant later saving John Aldridge’s penalty. Marcus Gayle’s secondhalf goal gave the Dons a shock win to deny United a fourth straight cup final appearance. Wimbledon were later defeated in the semi-final by Chelsea. CARLISLE manager Keith Curle goes into today’s clash with Sheffield Wednesday on the back of a make-or-break meeting with club bosses.

Curle’s future was on the line after a poor campaign by United in League Two – and this match with the Owls provides welcome respite.

Prior to yesterday’s meeting Curle (above) said: “My contract situation will be discussed. What we need is some clarity on where we all stand.

“You can’t say you’re going to go into a meeting like that to negotiate because you have to be offered something to be able to negotiate in the first place.”

Lee Bullen (inset) has warned Wednesday’s misfiring side they are playing for their futures.

The managerless Owls were humbled 3-0 by lowly Burton a week ago, and the caretaker boss is looking for a reaction.

“People are playing for their futures,” said Bullen. “There is a new guy coming in, but after performances like the Burton game what is he going to think?”
