Jail riot breaks out in terrifying clash over darts or footie on TV
A PRISON riot erupted after lags fought over whether to watch darts or football on TV.
Six guards were attacked with pool cues and other makeshift weapons in the terrifying flare-up at a maximum-security jail.
Soccer fans insisted on seeing the St Mirren-Dundee United Scottish Championship match.
But supporters of Scots darts hero Gary Anderson wanted to watch him in action against Phil “The Power” Taylor in the quarter-finals of the World Darts Championships on Sky Sports.
One insider at HMP Shotts in Lanarkshire said the speed at which the violence broke out was frightening. The source said: “Some wanted to watch the football and others the darts. The staff and prisoners were caught up in intense violence before authorities could calm things down.”
Prisoners now face tough internal sanctions that could have them put into segregation or switched to other jails. The source added: “It shows what a dangerous place it can be – not just for prisoners but for guards just doing their jobs.” A Scottish Prison Service spokeswoman said: “We are able to confirm an incident happened on December 29.” She added no guards needed hospital treatment for any serious injuries.
