Viking star dies at 23

- BY GARETH WALKER

WIDNES VIKINGS’ new signing Kato Ottio has died suddenly at the age of 23.

The Papua New Guinea centre, who faced England in the World Cup quarterfinals in November, had yet to arrive in England after signing for the Vikings after the tournament.

Widnes chief executive James Rule said: “We are devastated to learn that Kato has passed away.

“Kato was an incredibly talented player, with a bright future ahead of him in rugby league.

“Having only learned this morning that Kato had developed a sudden health issue while training yesterday, we are in absolute shock to now receive this tragic news.”

Marwan Koukash has handed over Salford Red Devils to a group of fans with business experience. The RFL approved the takeover yesterday, with the consortium aiming to “represent fans and the Salford community”.
