New start a non-starter

-

APPOINTING despised Esther McVey as Welfare Secretary with orders to impose savage benefit cuts has exposed the rancid underbelly of Theresa May’s rule.

Behind the spin about social justice is a Government deliberately making life worse for grafters cheated of financial support while big corporations are treated to tax cuts.

McVey is arguably the worst of a string of terrible choices in the worst reshuffle for years.

The defiance of Cabinet Ministers refusing to budge – and, in the case of Justine Greening, walk instead of accepting a new post – underlined the Prime Minister’s dwindling authority.

What was supposed to be a new start in 2018 resembled the chaos of the 2017 General Election which blew her majority and left the Tories in hock to Northern Ireland Unionists bought with a £1billion bung of taxpayer cash.

The PM has lost the respect of Tories who no longer fear her and has the contempt of Labour MPs who must fight every inch of the way to save the public from her party’s spite.

If dithering May was the answer to any of the huge problems confronting Britain we would be asking the wrong question.
