Heroic Owen died saving girls in river

- BY MARTIN FRICKER

A HERO schoolboy drowned after jumping into a river to save two girls who were in difficulty, an inquest heard.

Owen Jenkins, 12, pulled 13-year-old Jorgie Myers from the fast-flowing water and gave orders to others to help her pal Chelsea Holroyd, 12.

But the talented rugby player, of Nottingham, was swept away by the strong current in the River Trent after his heroics last July.

Coroner Mairin Casey told the inquest at the city that Owen “selflessly and fearlessly put the safety of others before his own”.

Owen’s parents said: “He was sweet, innocent and selfless. It was consistent with his character that he risked his own life to help save others. We are so proud of what he did.”
