ROOT’S ILLNESS GIVES KIWI REPRIEVE TO STONEMAN AND VINCE
TREVOR BAYLISS is waiting for Joe Root to get off his sick bed before England can confirm whether Ashes flops James Vince and Mark Stoneman will get a final chance in New Zealand.
Root (right) has been suffering from dehydration, and coach Bayliss will want to discuss the selection dilemma with his skipper.
The failings of Vince and Stoneman have been symptomatic of the problems England have faced in Oz.
Both batsmen provided glimpses of what they can do without posting any scores of real substance. Despite their mediocre Test averages – 22 for Vince and 27 for Stoneman – Bayliss wants to see if they can use what they have learnt in Australia to good effect elsewhere. “Personally I think people like Stoneman and Vince will probably get another couple of games to show us what they have Test bowling only All Ashes Tests 2017-18 114 .......... “At the top level it is about making big scores, not 50s, 20s and 30s – but they have shown enough that they should get another couple of games.” Bayliss admitted he wouldn’t renew his contract once it runs out at the end of the 2019 summer, so would not lead another tour Down Under.
He added: “If the away Ashes series is our Holy Grail for our Test side then you are probably better off making some changes well in advance.” Test bowling only All Ashes Tests 2017-18 49 ..........
