Daniel Ortega, leader of the Sandinistas, became President of Nicaragua, pledging to continue the country’s move to socialism with links to the Soviet Union.

UN Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar met Saddam Hussein in Baghdad in a last-ditch attempt to avoid war in the Gulf. A UN Security Council resolution authorised the use of force against Iraq if Saddam failed to withdraw his troops from Kuwait within five days.
