Tide of filth
A BEACH is strewn with plastic and rubbish after the worst wave of pollution in four years was washed up across coastlines in the wake of Storm Eleanor. The Cornish coast has been covered with broken fishing nets, Lego pieces and everything from plastic straws and bottles to shredded bags and polystyrene. Penhale Sands, above, Perranporth, Constantine Bay, Crooklets and Newquay are among the worst affected. Charity Surfers Against Sewage said it hadn’t seen such plastic detritus since Storm Hercules in 2014. Chief executive Hugo Tagholm called it “a plastic war zone”.
