55st care patient too heavy to attend court for assault

- BY MARTIN FRICKER

A CARE home patient who assaulted his nurses could not attend court because he weighs 55 stone.

Bedridden Matthew Crawford, 32, lives at the home because “it is the only place that has a hoist”.

Andrew Little, defending, said: “They’ve ambulances big enough to support him but how [does he] get into court? He can’t walk.”

Crawford admitted four counts of assault last year that left victims with “bruising”.

Mansfield magistrates heard Crawford, of Pathfinders Centre in Ollerton, Notts, was in breach of a suspended term for assaulting a police officer.

It would take “inordinate” manpower to get him to court, district judge Andrew Meachin said, extending the suspended 16-week term by a month, with £50 to be paid to each victim.
