Hughton: Targets have no point

- BY CHRIS HATHERALL

CHRIS HUGHTON refused to set Brighton a points target for Premier League survival before their six-pointer at West Brom.

The Seagulls have enjoyed a strong start in the top flight so far, currently sitting in 12th place with 23 points – seven ahead of the Baggies, who are only one off the bottom. But boss Hughton (below) knows they are still in a relegation struggle and is wary of believing that reaching the traditional survival mark of 40 points will be enough to do it.

He said: “We never had any targets at the start of the season and there’s still no targets. The reason why the 40-point mark is one we associate with is because of law of averages and that’s not a bad one to have in your mind. “But the moment you start relying on that is when you can be in trouble. We have to win as many games as we can, get as many points as we can and hopefully that’s enough.”
