Tories’ anger at plan to cut armed forces

- BY MIKEY SMITH

PRESSURE Mr Williamson DEFENCE Secretary Gavin Williamson is under pressure from MPs in his own party to reject planned cuts to the armed forces.

He insisted “hard work” was being done to get “the right resources” from the Treasury for the services.

Tory MPs have called on him to act after a review of forces’ funding proposed cutting 14,000 personnel and 100 helicopters.

Tory defence committee chairman Dr Julian Lewis said: “It’s time for the Treasury to pay.”

And Mark Francois said Mr Williamson must rebuff the “pinstripe warriors” of the Treasury.

Prime Minister Theresa May and Mr Williamson have rejected the cuts, but Tory Johnny Mercer said: “I want someone to say that this is unacceptable.”
