FOUR in 10 staff who have called in sick still dealt with work emails, talked to colleagues and took phone calls, a survey found.

A third said the boss had asked them to do tasks and a quarter felt their manager expected them to work through a sick day.

The average Brit takes two sick days a year but four in 10 keep on working when poorly, mouth spray firm ColdZyme found.

It said: “We are under more pressure than ever in our working lives.” THE incredible tale of a British female Second World War spy has been told for the first time.

AN Army dog who helped save his platoon by charging an enemy machine gun during the Second World War has won the “animal Victoria Cross” some 71 years after his death.

German shepherd husky cross Chips has finally been honoured with the PDSA Dickin Medal, the top war honour for an animal, for protecting British troops.

During the US-led invasion of Sicily in July 1943, aptly called Operation Husky, Chips and his platoon came under fire as they landed on a beach at dawn.

But, as the soldiers headed for cover, Chips escaped from his lead and ran towards the enemy machine gun in a hut.

Chips entered the shack and the firing stopped. He attacked an enemy soldier and also pulled the machine gun off the mount, disabling it.

The gallant dog suffered scalp wounds and powder burns during the incident.

The animal was returned to his family in New York after the war in December 1945. He died the next year.

John Wren, 76, whose father donated Chips to the war effort, said the Dickin Medal “means a lot” to his family.

He added: “If you look at what he did, it was pretty unbelievable.”

The award, the 70th ever presented, was made yesterday at the Churchill War Rooms in London. US military dog Ayron received the medal on behalf of Chips. FURS CLASS Ayron gets medal for Chips
