Foods has played down reports that might sell its Batchelors Cup a Soup brand to its biggest shareholder.

The company, which is also behind Ambrosia custard and Bisto gravy, said a potential sale had not gone beyond an “exploratory stage”. There was speculation that Batchelors could be sold to Japan’s Nissin for £200m.
