Bennell ‘told of technique for grooming’

- BY ELEANOR BARLOW

FOOTBALL coach Barry Bennell told police he had a grooming process for boys, a court heard.

The ex-Man City and Crewe Alexandra coach was quizzed on claims of serious sexual assault, which he denied.

But he told officers he had tried to groom the boy.

In the transcript, Bennell said: “I got friendly with him so he’d trust me, it was my usual procedure.”

Asked if the boy was vulnerable, he said: “Yes, he was very easily led. He would have been a victim, that’s why I coached him.”

Liverpool crown court heard that another victim said Bennell was treated like “a God” during visits to Man City’s ground.

Bennell, 64, denies 48 counts of historical sexual abuse. The trial continues.
