£750,000 of Hatton haul too wrecked to return to owners

- BY CHRIS DYER

AROUND £750,000 of jewellery recovered from the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit heist was too damaged to be given back to its owners, a court heard.

Five of the ageing robbers behind the Easter 2015 ransacking of 73 boxes in London’s jewellery quarter face confiscation orders.

Prosecutors are seeking to claw back nearly £13.7million they said the gang made when they bored into the vault wall to steal valuables. They put their haul in wheelie bins and most of it has not been found. Daniel Jones, 63, and William Lincoln, 60, the only two of the five jailed raiders at Woolwich crown court, spoke only to confirm their names. Brian Reader, 78, the oldest of the gang who was jailed for six years three months, did not appear at court due to ill health. The other four members were locked up for seven years.
